Lars Alfredsson

Lars Alfredsson was appointed professor in epidemiology at the Department of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet in 2002. His main research area is the interaction between environmental factors and genetics in inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases. Lars is the principal investigator of EIMS and has, together with Tomas Olsson and Jan Hillert, the main responsibility for the EIMS study.

Tomas Olsson

Tomas Olsson was appointed professor in molecular medicine and neurology at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet in 1995. His main research area is identifying genetic factors which increase the risk of developing MS and assessing how these genetic risk factors are affected by different environmental and lifestyle factors.

Tomas is actively involved in several large-scale EU-projects and is responsible for numerous clinical trials of new medicines developed to inhibit the progression of MS. He is also a member of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Insitutet.

Jan Hillert

Jan Hillert was appointed professor in neurology at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at Karolinska Institute in 2001.

He is responsible for the Swedish MS directory (SMSreg) which is a large-scale database containing information on over 10,000 Swedish MS patients.

The main focus of his research is to identify which genes affect the risk of developing MS. He is also assessing which factors determine how a patient will respond to MS treatments and how genetic and environmental factors are associated in the development of MS. The aim of his research is to develop more effective treatment plans for MS patients where genetics, medicine and lifestyle factors are included.

Ingrid Kockum

Ingrid is an associate professor at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM) at Karolinska Institutet. She is involved in research on both MS and diabetes. She is a key figure in the coordination of gene analysis and the collection of blood samples in the EIMS study.

She is also actively involved in the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium (IMSGC).

Anna-Karin Hedström

Anna-Karin is a Post-Doc at the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet. She is assessing how environmental and lifestyle factors such as smoking, using snuff and working irregular hours, in combination with genetic factors affect the risk of developing MS..
