Collaborative Partners

The EIMS Study is a part of a large-scale international network of scientific studies which assess associations between genetics and multiple sclerosis (MS). The network is called IMSGC – The International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium. The IMSGC is made up of 44 collaborative universities and hospitals. Through collaboration and information dissemination a comprehensive knowledge bank can be compiled. Such extensive information will lead to a better understanding of the causes of MS which in turn may lead to both the development of improved treatment plans for MS patients and the prevention of the disease in the future.

The EIMS study also collaborates with the Nordic Genetics Group, headed by Janna Saarela, Helsinki; Anette Oturai, Copenhagen; and Hanne Harbo, Oslo.

Lisa Barcellos, Associate Professor of Epidemiology, and colleagues at the University of California are assessing how environmental factors, such as smoking, in combination with genetic factors increase the risk of developing MS. The EIMS study has recently started an exciting collaboration with Lisa Barcellos concerning risk factors for developing MS.

The EIMS study is also working together with two EU projects; Eurotrans and Neurinox.

Euratrans is a consortium of large-scale genetic research projects which aims to increase knowledge of mechanisms behind diseases such as MS. The project coordinator is Norbert Hubner, Berlin.

Neurinox is a project which aims to understand an enzyme called NOX. NOX causes lesions and inflammation of the nervous system. The aim of this project is to develop new treatment methods for MS patients based on knowledge about NOX. The project coordinator is Karl Heinz Krause, Geneva.
